Talk:AppleTV 2.1 Safe Update

From AwkwardTV
Jump to: navigation, search

The biggest question then... why aren't the frappliances working under 2.0?

AirTunes?

I don't seem to be able to choose my Apple TV as a speaker through iTunes. It seems there's something missing from this howto. Has anyone found the missing link? --Staed 18:36, 13 February 2008 (CET)

There are several files like airtunesd that must be copied over but haven't been listed in the safe update yet. --Retroneo 02:29, 14 February 2008 (CET)

Tried copying airtunesd and the airtunes plist file, but it didnt seem to work. The Apple TV showed up in iTunes as an external speaker, but it was not possible to select it. When I tried to select it it just wouldn't take --staed 12:28, 14 February 2008 (CET)

same issue here, looks like all those two files (airtunesd and com.apple.airtunesd.plist) do is launch the bonjour listener and respawn it if it dies.... itunes7.6 --ProfessaFresh 14:24, 20 February 2008 (CET)

Additional Updates

There are two other updates in addition to the dmg above. They appear to update the EFI and install new firmware for HDMI. This is probably causing the 1080i playback issues. Has anyone done a safe update, and installed these other two updates? Does it work? Does 1080i work?

It works!!!!

Hy... thanks for the procedure!!

I followed it step by step and it worked perfectly!!!

SCP and SSH still working on my hacked appletv :-) very nice

plugins disappeared... I'm too happy I can now use a US account to have real video-on-demand service

[UPDATE]: as noted by somebody else: TV shows are working... Movie Rentals NOT! it says my appleTV is not authorized

now it is time to open its platform too (SDK also for appletv?)

nitoTV

hi thank's alot fot the safe update to take 2 it works great, just install yesterday night and test a bit.

HD Rentals

This safe update does not allow HD Rentals to work. When you attempt to play them back, you receive a message saying that the Apple TV is not authorized to play the movie. When the download is complete, it's reported as corrupt.

I presume that you need the HDMI firmware update for this to work. Seems Apple has added HDCP DRM, which denies playback unless you have HDCP compliant display hardware.

It happened to me too! After giving the message "AppleTV is not authorized to play the movie", I have an "Error" button instead of the "Rent" one.
If I check my downloads status (under Settings-->Downloads) I see the following message: "Download Error (-42177)

Any idea how to install the HDMI firmware update? --Yanke 17:49, 15 February 2008 (CET)

Resolution Change

Seems that every time the Finder restarts, it resets the resolution :(
I have a 4:3 projector and I used to have the resolution set to 1024x768, but now, changing it either via System Preferences or by using this guide : http://wiki.awkwardtv.org/wiki/Composite, works just until the finder starts again and the resolution is changed back to 420p.

HDMI & EFI updates

Has anyone tried to download the EFI update from there (2 links):

- http://mesu.apple.com/data/EFI/061-3046.20080212.U7tgG/AppleCapsule.efi EFI-InstallerURL

- http://mesu.apple.com/data/EFI/009-7567.20080212.Vc45T/LOCKED_ATV11_00DA_00B.scap EFI-UpdateURL

and the HDMI update from there (2 links):

I noticed that /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/AppleTV.framework/Resources/SettingsHelper looks for directory contents of /Users/frontrow/Updates.

Could it be as simple as dropping the 4 files downloaded above into this directory (and reboot) in order to perform the hdmi and efi updates ? --Junglepop 05:38, 18 February 2008 (CET)

/User/frontrow/Updates didn't work for me

Copy those two files to AppleTV Use Terminal to run this command

$ chmod +x hdmiutil

$ chmod +x FW29050_20080205_dse_hex.sihex

$ ./hdmiutil FW29050_20080205_dse_hex.sihex

Terminal should respond with this message

hdmiutil - HDMI Flash Utility Version 1.1000 (Mac) For Programming Silicon Image's SiI1930 (DVI-HDMI) microcontroller. Copyright (C) 2006-2008, NVIDIA Corporation. All Rights Reserved. After unplug and re-plug, your AppleTV should be able to play rented HD movie.

Doing a full update, followed by a restore, followed by a safe update?

Would doing a full update (using Apple's updater) - followed by a factory reset to 1.0 (for us lucky 1.0 owners) - followed by patchstick + this safe update give Take 2 + the HDMI firmware update?

Also - does the AppleTV playback rented HD movies over component? --RyeBrye 06:53, 18 February 2008 (CET)

works pretty well

I was just able to do a full 1.0 restore to a take2 safe update. I saved some time (stupid slow gimpy wifi) by adding the take2 software DMG to my patchstick (i've got a couple hundred megs free on it, why not?) and adding this in the patchstick's installer.d directory (as take2):

if [ -f /stuff/take2/2Z694-5274-109.dmg ] ; then
  echo -n "* copying take2 dmg to / ... "
  cp /stuff/take2/2Z694-5274-109.dmg /OSBoot/2Z694-5274-109.dmg
  echo "done."
else
  echo "take2 file not found, not installing"
fi

Make sure you put the DMG in a take2 subfolder off the root of the patch.

Now to get kerberos working again... I was able to find a backed up whole disk DMG of my Tiger patchstick, now that I'm on Leopard I doubt its kerberos.framework will play nice.
