Doesn't software-based HDDVD decoding take a ton of processor power? I'm not sure if the CPU in the AppleTV would be able to keep up. ProfessaFresh 16:33, 16 April 2007 (CEST)
- Yes, software-based decoding does. But the NVIDIA video chip (7300 or 7400) on the unit has H.264 decoding assistance.Mrand 21:09, 16 April 2007 (CEST)
- I stand corrected! ProfessaFresh 04:18, 17 April 2007 (CEST)
This is probably only possible with a select number of titles. HD-DVD's bitrate sweet spot is 15Mbits. It is also specced up to 1080p. Some titles may also be MPEG2, not H264-codec-based. Transcoding of the majority of titles will be required to get them to play on the ATV.
Here's the resolution table for HDDVD:
1920x1080x59.94-i (16:9) 1920x1080x50-i (16:9) 1920x1080x25-p (16:9) 1920x1080x23.97-p (16:9) 1280x720x59.94-p (16:9) 1280x720x50-p (16:9) 1280x720x24-p (16:9) 1280x720x23.976-p (16:9) 720x480x59.94-I (4:3 & 16:9) 720x480x50-I (4:3 & 16:9) 320x240x24-p (4:3)
