Talk:Beginners Guide for 2.x
First things first. At the beginning one should write "Beginners guide to 'patchstick 2.0'" --David2tm 18:56, 19 February 2008 (CET)
If you read the Beginners Guide for 1.0 (I wrote it, too), it includes making the Patchstick as part of the process. The page will be a complete hacking of 2.0 from start to finish, including the patchstick.
To drag and drop files to the appleTV, I use MacFusion for its access to virtual SSH shares. This way you can mount the aTV disk on your mac. A version for Windows of the Fuse file system program should exist too, but never searched for it. --Tego 16:32, 23 February 2008 (CET)
I'm a complete beginner here; my ATV is still shrink-wrapped on the desk in front of me. I came to this guide primarily in order to get my system up and running with Perian, and I was also interested in the rtorrent install. But I can't make heads or tails of this page! At various places in it it seems it's working, or not working, or somewhat working.
I also looked at some other articles on making a Take2 patchstick, which seems to be the key. Those pages seem to suggest everything is ready to go, right?

Chill. Out. Try and remember this is all done on a volunteer basis and we all have lives outside this website - like me, with a 10 week old baby, for one. So, if it's occasionally not quite a clear as it could be, sorry and tough in equal measure.
The page isn't finished and I haven't tried hacking 2.0 from start to finish and done it successfully. In theory, everything is indeed ready to go. I got a 2.0 Patchstick working - but not following the page linked, although that's not to say it wouldn't work. I just used a different method, as listed in the forums. I could not get AFP working, nor USB support. I haven't had time to try again recently.

will this work if i have firmware 1.1?
I am running ATV with firware 1.1. I have tried a factory reset and it turns out thats the version it came with. I tried to follow the downgrading procedures but I was unable to get a copy of the OS.dmg file from the 1.0 firmware.
Is this beginner's guide made only with those with version 2.0 or will it work for me?
Also, how soon will it be complete?
I really appreciate all the tips on this page!
You can just upgrade to 2.0 by going to Settings --> Software Update.
I've not had time to try the processes detailed here so cannot vouch for them. They've been up for a while though, so I would expect they work reasonably well now. Try them and see how you get on.
