[edit] I'm trying to watch a movie but it won't open -or- there is no video -or- there is no audio. What do I do?

  1. Identify the file, video and audio format of the movie (such as .avi file, DivX video and AC3 audio
  2. Find, download and install a QuickTime component that allows playback (decompression) of the video, and possibly another for the audio
  3. If compatible components aren't available, try an alternative player that might support the file, video and audio format of the movie
  • If no alternative OS X players support the movie either, you could try OS 9 compatible players and components in Classic (on Macs with PowerPC processors) or Windows compatible players within an emulator such as VirtualPC

Note: Video encoded with the H.264 codec requires QuickTime 7 for playback.

[edit] QuickTime Pro

There is no QuickTime Pro. There is QuickTime. There are "advanced features" of that same QuickTime. Apple refers to these "advanced features" as "QuickTime Pro". The features (such as the ability to export a movie) are activated by entering what Apple alternately refers to as a "key", a "serial number", a "registration key" or a "registration code" into the Apple menu > System Preferences > QuickTime > Registration screen. Both the "Registered to:" field and the "Registration Code:" field must -exactly- match the information provided by Apple (generally via email) after paying for the "Pro" "registration code".

WARNING: Installing or updating QuickTime 7 over an installation of QuickTime 6 with Pro registration WILL VOID THE PRO REGISTRATION FOR QUICKTIME 6 and the "Pro" features will be GONE because the "registration code" was to activate the "Pro" features of QuickTime 6 NOT QuickTime 7.

Once more for clarity: One can not "Buy QuickTime Pro", one can not "Upgrade to QuickTime Pro", one can not "Add QuickTime Pro to your shopping cart" nor can one download or install QuickTime Pro. One CAN purchase a QuickTime Pro "registration code" with which to activate the "Pro" features of the QuickTime that is already on one's Mac.

If your QuickTime Registration screen shows your name, registration key and "QuickTime Pro" or if you can save or export a movie from within QuickTime Player, or if you can create a new player window in QuickTime Player, then you have QuickTime Pro.

If you lose your key, return to the same Apple Store online from which you purchased the key (for instance the U.S. Apple Store online) sign in by clicking the "Your Account" button on the page and use the same AppleID that was used when purchasing the key, then check the "Software Download Purchases" link.

[edit] About media file formats

mov, avi, vfw, asf, wmv, rm, mpg and mkv extensions specify that a file is of a given format. These file formats allow various types of media such as video, audio and still images to be contained within the file. The media contained within the file could be compressed or encoded with any number of CoDecs (compressor-decompressors). To play the content of the file requires having a program that can read the file format and decompress the content (the decompression may be provided by a plug-in such as a QuickTime component.)

[edit] About DRM

Digital Rights Management methods generally require a decryption key to play back the encrypted media.

[edit] Apple's FairPlay (m4p)

Music and videos purchased via the iTunes Music Store employ Apple's DRM method (FairPlay.) Play-back of the file must be "authorized" through the ITMS. Authorization keys are stored in /Users/Shared/SC Info/SC Info.sidb and are specific to the computer on which authorization was obtained (via the computer's built-in Ethernet port's M.A.C. address) Up to five simultaneous authorizations are allowed per file. It is possible to deauthorize a computer which disallows play-back of a file, removes the authorization/decryption key from the SC Info.sidb file on the computer and reduces the number of authorizations in use.

[edit] Microsoft Windows Media DRM

Only the very first version of Microsoft's Windows Media DRM is supported on Mac OS X (via Windows Media Player 9) Newer versions of WMV DRM require Microsoft Windows, the Microsoft Windows Media Player version 10 (for Windows only) and the license key for each media file.

See http://www.realnetworks.com/company/press/releases/2003/helixdrm.html

[edit] About QuickTime components

[edit] Where do they go?

Generally, components provided by Apple belong in /System/Library/QuickTime
Third-party (non-Apple brand) components to be shared by all users on a given Mac should be in /Library/QuickTime
Third-party (non-Apple brand) components to be used by a single user of a given Mac should be in ~/Library/QuickTime ( ~ is the user's home folder )
QuickTime also uses components from other locations as well, such as /Library/Components and /Library/Audio (generally for MIDI components.)

[edit] Is it ok to copy a component from one Mac to another?

Some components rely on files which are installed by the installer, in locations other than /Library/QuickTime so generally if the component has an installer, its better to run the installer on the Mac where the component will be used.
Check the license agreement for any commercial component to ensure that using it on multiple computers is acceptable.

[edit] What's a 'thing'?

QuickTime components generally provide one or more 'things' ( thng resources ) to QuickTime. There are many kinds of 'things' such as codecs (compressors & decompressors) and stream handlers. File importers are "eat ", exporters are "spit", image decompressors are "imdc", image compressors are "imco", audio / sound decoders are "sdec".

For example, to find components listed on this page that allow exporting to mpeg, 'Find' on this page (command-f) and search for spit:mp then 'Find next' (usually command-g.)

"Each component has a type, a subtype, and a manufacturer code, each represented by a four-character code. A four-character code is a 32-bit value that is usually best interpreted as four ASCII characters. For example, an image decompressor component has a type of 'imdc'.

QuickTime often has multiple components of a given type. For example, QuickTime has many [image] decompressor components. They all have the same type: 'imdc'. Each 'imdc' component has a subtype that specifies the kind of compression it understands, such as JPEG, and a manufacturer code that distinguishes among components of the same subtype. For example, the image decompressor for JPEG supplied by Apple has the type, subtype, and manufacturer codes of 'imdc', 'jpeg', 'aapl' ."
http://developer.apple.com/documentation/QuickTime/RM/Fundamentals/QTOverview/index.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP30000992

To see which 'things' are available in QuickTime on your Mac, use qt_tools, ThingLister or FiendishThngs.

[edit] What are 68K, Fat, PowerPC (PPC) and Universal applications?

Macintosh software that runs only on Motorola 68K processors are called "68K" applications. Mac software that runs on PowerPC processors (such as the G3, G4 and G5) are called "PowerPC Native" or "PPC" applications. Mac software that runs on both 68K and PPC processors are called "Fat" applications (because they contain code for both processors.) Mac software that runs on both PPC and Intel processors are called "Unversal" applications.
How to tell if an application is Universal

How to force QuickTime Player to run in Rosetta on a Mac with an Intel processor so that QuickTime can use components that aren't Universal

"This is an exporter for exporting to AAC ADTS (.aac) files. These files can be played on Nokia phones that play AAC. If the movie being exported contains a single AAC audio track, then the audio track will be losslessly repackaged as an AAC file. For everything else, the audio is compressed as 44.1kHz 128kb stereo AAC first. Currently there is no way to specify different sample rates or bit rates. Currently the exporter makes no attempt to preserve meta-data (ID3 tags, etc.)."
