I'm trying to watch a movie but it won't open -or- there is no video -or- there is no audio. What do I do?

  1. Identify the file, video and audio format of the movie (such as .avi file, DivX video and AC3 audio
  2. Find, download and install a QuickTime component that allows playback (decompression) of the video, and possibly another for the audio
  3. If compatible components aren't available, try an alternative player that might support the file, video and audio format of the movie
  • If no alternative OS X players support the movie either, you could try OS 9 compatible players and components in Classic (on Macs with PowerPC processors) or Windows compatible players within an emulator such as VirtualPC

Note: Video encoded with the H.264 codec requires QuickTime 7 for playback.

QuickTime Pro

There is no QuickTime Pro. There is QuickTime. There are "advanced features" of that same QuickTime. Apple refers to these "advanced features" as "QuickTime Pro". The features (such as the ability to export a movie) are activated by entering what Apple alternately refers to as a "key", a "serial number", a "registration key" or a "registration code" into the Apple menu > System Preferences > QuickTime > Registration screen. Both the "Registered to:" field and the "Registration Code:" field must -exactly- match the information provided by Apple (generally via email) after paying for the "Pro" "registration code".

WARNING: Installing or updating QuickTime 7 over an installation of QuickTime 6 with Pro registration WILL VOID THE PRO REGISTRATION FOR QUICKTIME 6 and the "Pro" features will be GONE because the "registration code" was to activate the "Pro" features of QuickTime 6 NOT QuickTime 7.

Once more for clarity: One can not "Buy QuickTime Pro", one can not "Upgrade to QuickTime Pro", one can not "Add QuickTime Pro to your shopping cart" nor can one download or install QuickTime Pro. One CAN purchase a QuickTime Pro "registration code" with which to activate the "Pro" features of the QuickTime that is already on one's Mac.

If your QuickTime Registration screen shows your name, registration key and "QuickTime Pro" or if you can save or export a movie from within QuickTime Player, or if you can create a new player window in QuickTime Player, then you have QuickTime Pro.

If you lose your key, return to the same Apple Store online from which you purchased the key (for instance the U.S. Apple Store online) sign in by clicking the "Your Account" button on the page and use the same AppleID that was used when purchasing the key, then check the "Software Download Purchases" link.

About media file formats

mov, avi, vfw, asf, wmv, rm, mpg and mkv extensions specify that a file is of a given format. These file formats allow various types of media such as video, audio and still images to be contained within the file. The media contained within the file could be compressed or encoded with any number of CoDecs (compressor-decompressors). To play the content of the file requires having a program that can read the file format and decompress the content (the decompression may be provided by a plug-in such as a QuickTime component.)

About DRM

Digital Rights Management methods generally require a decryption key to play back the encrypted media.

Apple's FairPlay (m4p)

Music and videos purchased via the iTunes Music Store employ Apple's DRM method (FairPlay.) Play-back of the file must be "authorized" through the ITMS. Authorization keys are stored in /Users/Shared/SC Info/SC Info.sidb and are specific to the computer on which authorization was obtained (via the computer's built-in Ethernet port's M.A.C. address) Up to five simultaneous authorizations are allowed per file. It is possible to deauthorize a computer which disallows play-back of a file, removes the authorization/decryption key from the SC Info.sidb file on the computer and reduces the number of authorizations in use.

Microsoft Windows Media DRM

Only the very first version of Microsoft's Windows Media DRM is supported on Mac OS X (via Windows Media Player 9) Newer versions of WMV DRM require Microsoft Windows, the Microsoft Windows Media Player version 10 (for Windows only) and the license key for each media file.

About QuickTime components

Where do they go?

Generally, components provided by Apple belong in /System/Library/QuickTime
Third-party (non-Apple brand) components to be shared by all users on a given Mac should be in /Library/QuickTime
Third-party (non-Apple brand) components to be used by a single user of a given Mac should be in ~/Library/QuickTime ( ~ is the user's home folder )
QuickTime also uses components from other locations as well, such as /Library/Components and /Library/Audio (generally for MIDI components.)

Is it ok to copy a component from one Mac to another?

Some components rely on files which are installed by the installer, in locations other than /Library/QuickTime so generally if the component has an installer, its better to run the installer on the Mac where the component will be used.
Check the license agreement for any commercial component to ensure that using it on multiple computers is acceptable.

What's a 'thing'?

QuickTime components generally provide one or more 'things' ( thng resources ) to QuickTime. There are many kinds of 'things' such as codecs (compressors & decompressors) and stream handlers. File importers are "eat ", exporters are "spit", image decompressors are "imdc", image compressors are "imco", audio / sound decoders are "sdec".

For example, to find components listed on this page that allow exporting to mpeg, 'Find' on this page (command-f) and search for spit:mp then 'Find next' (usually command-g.)

"Each component has a type, a subtype, and a manufacturer code, each represented by a four-character code. A four-character code is a 32-bit value that is usually best interpreted as four ASCII characters. For example, an image decompressor component has a type of 'imdc'.

QuickTime often has multiple components of a given type. For example, QuickTime has many [image] decompressor components. They all have the same type: 'imdc'. Each 'imdc' component has a subtype that specifies the kind of compression it understands, such as JPEG, and a manufacturer code that distinguishes among components of the same subtype. For example, the image decompressor for JPEG supplied by Apple has the type, subtype, and manufacturer codes of 'imdc', 'jpeg', 'aapl' ."

To see which 'things' are available in QuickTime on your Mac, use qt_tools, ThingLister or FiendishThngs.

What are 68K, Fat, PowerPC (PPC) and Universal applications?

Macintosh software that runs only on Motorola 68K processors are called "68K" applications. Mac software that runs on PowerPC processors (such as the G3, G4 and G5) are called "PowerPC Native" or "PPC" applications. Mac software that runs on both 68K and PPC processors are called "Fat" applications (because they contain code for both processors.) Mac software that runs on both PPC and Intel processors are called "Unversal" applications.
How to tell if an application is Universal

How to force QuickTime Player to run in Rosetta on a Mac with an Intel processor so that QuickTime can use components that aren't Universal

"This is an exporter for exporting to AAC ADTS (.aac) files. These files can be played on Nokia phones that play AAC. If the movie being exported contains a single AAC audio track, then the audio track will be losslessly repackaged as an AAC file. For everything else, the audio is compressed as 44.1kHz 128kb stereo AAC first. Currently there is no way to specify different sample rates or bit rates. Currently the exporter makes no attempt to preserve meta-data (ID3 tags, etc.)."

DFG1394VDIG.component

http://www.outcastsoft.com/ASCPRODUCTS.html
"The "DFG1394VDIG.component" is a Video DIGitizer (VDIG) component that acts as a liaison between "The Imaging Sources'"s DFG/1394-1 Analog/Digital FireWire Converter hardware and Mac OS X. QuickTime based Video Digitizing Applications such as BTV Pro or Security Spy (which we highly recommend), Movie Works, Evo Cam, QuickTime Broadcaster and others can then access the hardware via the VDIG to deliver Video.
Until you purchase an unlock key for each DFG/1394-1 device, the "DFG1394VDIG.component" VDIG will run in "Demo Mode". In Demo Mode, the VDIG will operate normally for up to 10 minutes and then will being [sic] scrambling the Video colors (pink and green) alternating every 5 to 10 seconds. This allows you to try the VDIG out for extended periods before paying for it."

ASC_BAYER.component

http://www.outcastsoft.com/ASCPRODUCTS.html
"The "Astro IIDC" (pronounced "Astro Eye-Eye-D-C") name is derived from our target market (Astronomy) and the protocol ("Instrumentation & Industrial Digital Camera") that is used to interact with FireWire Cameras.
The application was developed to make scientific imaging simpler, easier and more effective. Rather than use Apple's and other QuickTime based drivers with the inherent limitations of the Sequence Grabber or Video Digitizing Component API, we use our Industrial Strength IIDC/DCAM framework to talk directly to the FireWire camera and completely replace the QuickTime functionality. So there are no drivers to install and almost everything (except for the Bayer QuickTime component for color movie playback) is done from within the "Astro IIDC" application". Additionally, the application makes extensive use of our custom built Altivec or Velocity Engine code for G4 and G5 processors and is multi P-threaded to to make maximum use of multiple processors. [...] if you have a color FireWire camera and will be recording movies, you will want to install the ASC_Bayer codec to play back the movies"

imdc:AVdv:AVID "AVID DV Codec"

"The new version of Avid Xpress DV ships with separate DV25 codecs that can be installed on any computer without the need for a dongle or license. These codecs can be used with any QuickTime compliant application (for example, After Effects) for the decoding of Avid-generated material as well as the encoding of DV25 material for reimport back into the Avid Xpress DV application.
The use of these codecs give an excellent workflow story: DV footage created in Avid Xpress DV can be transferred into third-party software without the need to reconvert the material, saving time and retaining quality. The same applies when rendering files in the third-party software: The material is created in the Avid DV-native resolution, so the quality will be preserved when reimporting it back into the Avid Xpress DV application"

The official version from Casio - for cameras EX-S500, EX-S600, EX-P505, EX-Z750. Version 1.1 of this component is a Universal binary for Macintosh computers with Intel or PowerPC CPUs.
http://world.casio.com/qv/download/en/avi/
Import / playback components for CASIO EXILIM MPEG4 AVI videos using Microsoft ISO MPEG-4 version 1.1 (M4S2) compression
In tests, when the official CASIO AVI Importer.component version 1.0 for Mac OS X (tested using Mac OS X 10.3.9 and QuickTime 7.0.4) is installed (in /Library/QuickTime) it interferes with the loading of certain avi files and causes long delays in the loading of others. The problems do not occur with the unofficial EX_M4S2 CoDec. Specifically avi files with these video types normally open quickly without the official Casio component installed but take a long time to open with the Casio component installed: dib raw, msvc cram, cvid cinepak, div4 div3 msmpeg4, mp42 msmpeg4v2
The Casio component seems to have no effect on the load time of avi files containing these video types: mjpg mjpeg, dx50 mpeg4, divx dx50, div3 msmpeg4, divx mpeg4, mpg4 msmpeg4v1, xvid_mpeg4, yv12 dx50_mpeg4

DivX 6 Beta - FREE

http://labs.divx.com/LatestMacCodec
http://labs.divx.com/MacOS
http://download.divx.com/labs/DivXFusionBeta3.dmg
A feature of the DivX component is that it allows QuickTime Player to recognize and open avi files that have been given the .divx filename extension. Of course renaming the file to .avi works with alternative CoDecs such as 3ivx or FFusion.
When DivX 6 and Flip4Mac WMV components are both installed, avi files with MP43 msmpeg4 video will be misidentified as DivX 3.1.1 encoding and the playback will be garbled blocks. A work-around is to pull out the DivX 6 component from /Library/QuickTime and quit QuickTime Player. Run QuickTime Player again and it will properly identify and play the video.
Note that the DivX 6 CoDec uses /Library/Frameworks/DivX Toolkit.framework which the installer installs.

Oak Street Software

GreenKey/Vector Key Quicktime Components
"Our VKey Quicktime Component is an easy to use, but powerful and clean vector keyer in the form of a Quicktime component that can be used in Quicktime player, Final Cut Pro, Final Cut Express, Adobe Premiere, and other tools that support Quicktime effects. The component is available now for Mac OS X.
A vector keyer is different from a legacy chroma-keyer in that it is not affected by shadows, and it generates a graduated key that preserves fine detail that would be lost with a traditional keyer.
Our developers saw a need for a chroma-keyer that would yield high quality results from DV-NTSC (720x480 4:1:1) video. As a software development company that produces video for clients and for internal use, we were determined to develop a solution that would give us optimal results without applying 4 filters or purchasing expensive compositing tools. As a consequence, our chroma-key solution has special features built in to compensate for the low color resolution of 4:1:1 video, and it sports the simplest, and maybe the best green suppression available today."

Flip4Mac WMV Import.component a.k.a. Flip4Mac WMV Player

Playback is FREE as of version 2.0 (2006)
http://www.flip4mac.com/wmv.htm
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/flip4mac.mspx
When the Flip4Mac WMV Player components are installed they prevent QuickTime Player from opening avi files containing dib mp42 msmpeg4v2 video. The relevant QuickTime Player error message is: QuickTime cannot open the file: "avi_mp43_msmpeg4-test.avi" an unknown error occurred (-50). A work-around is to quit QuickTime Player, drag the Flip4Mac WMV Import.component out of /Library/QuickTime and then the file will open and play in QuickTime Player.
When DivX 6 and Flip4Mac WMV components are both installed, asf files with MP43 msmpeg4 video will be misidentified as DivX 3.1.1 encoding and the playback will be garbled blocks. A work-around is to pull out the DivX 6 component from /Library/QuickTime and quit QuickTime Player. Run QuickTime Player again and it will properly identify and play the video.
Note: WMV / ASF (Windows Media Video / Advanced Systems Format - are the same format)
Note: This component allows playback of Pentax Optio avi movies on Mac OS X!

How To's

Identify the file*, video and audio** format of a movie or sound file

In QuickTime Player

Open the file
Window menu > Show movie info
Look in the Format: field
    • Note that QuickTime Player may fail to display any audio information for some files.

In MPlayer OSX

Show the playlist window if it isn't already visible.
Drag the movie file into the playlist window.
Select the movie in the list
Click the "i" button for info

In VLC

Open the movie in VLC
Window menu > Info
Click the black triangles so that they point down
  • Note that VLC does not display the file format, only the format of the content (audio and video) within the file. A file ending in .divx for instance, is probably in actuality an avi file but VLC doesn't show that information - MPlayer will and QuickTime Player will - if - QuickTime Player will open the file to begin with.

Identify "ms" audio

If the audio format is listed as "ms" it could be one of the following types. Unfortunately, the "ms" fourcc's don't all use characters that can be displayed so it might be necessary to view the file header in HexEdit

Thing Hex values ASCII Component
AC3 6D 73 20 00 ms AC3 Codec.component

MS-GSM 6.10 6D 73 00 31 ms 1 QuickTime (built-in)
MPEG Layer-3 Audio 6D 73 00 55 ms U QuickTime (built-in)
MPEG Layer-2 Audio 6D 73 00 50 ms P EyeTV MPEG Support.component

Change the default program for a type of file

To change which program is used to open a given filetype, select one such file in the Finder and Get Info (File menu.) In the "Open With" section of the Get Info window, select a program from the pop-up list or select "Other" and navigate to the program with which you wish the files to be opened. Click "Change All" to have all files of that type opened by the same program.

Force QuickTime Player to run within Rosetta on an Intel based Mac

1 Click the application's icon in the Finder.
2 From the Finder File menu, choose Get Info (or press Command-I).
3 Select the checkbox named "Open using Rosetta."

"Untrim" a trimmed QuickTime Movie

The trimmed file:

Change 4free back to 4moov, save the file.

The only other difference is additional, new information appended to the end of the trimmed file which does not appear to matter.

HexEdit is here: http://www.ifd.com/product_info.php/products_id/87
Note: HexEdit can not save a file with a name longer than 31 characters.

Use HexEdit to edit ~/Library/Preferences/QuickTime Preferences. Scroll down to offset $0b30. Change the values of the 4th and 5th hex bytes on that line (0b33 and 0b34) to the desired value. Values refer to KiloBytes so 00 01 is 1KB, FF FF is 65,536KB or 64 MegaBytes.

Download movies that are displayed within a browser window

Safari

View the page source, copy the full URL of the movie. Paste the URL into Safari's Downloads window.

Firefox

In Firefox (Which you can download here) on the first visit to the url of any mov file, (paste in the URL of this mov file for instance: http://images.apple.com/macbookpro/gallery/images/macbook_480_01122006.mov) a window will appear asking what to do.

If you then choose to "Save to Disk" and "Do this automatically for files like this one from now on" a Download action is created in Firefox's preferences. If no window appears, quit Firefox, pull the QuickTime plug-ins from /Library/Internet Plug-ins out to the Desktop and then run Firefox again.

To view or change the Download action:

Lock a mov file so that it is uneditable (can't be saved)

Use Script Editor (its in /Applications/AppleScript)

tell application "QuickTime Player" to set the saveable of movie 1 to false

Then save the movie, after which the save option will not be available in QuickTime based programs.

Unlock mov files that are uneditable

If the movie data atom is uncompressed, open the file in HexEdit and search for "nsav" as ASCII. If the values following "nsav" are anything other than 00 00 00 00 then the mov's "no save" flag is set. Change the values to 00 00 00 00 (zeros) and save the file. Open the file in QuickTime Player (Pro) to confirm that "Save" is now an option.

If the movie data atom is compressed (cmov vs. moov) then the atom must be decompressed prior to changing the nsav flag. See the following site for a php script that uncompresses the atom and changes the nsav flag.

$better = str_replace('nsav'."\x00\x00\x00\x01", 'nsav'."\x00\x00\x00\x00", $UncompressedHeader);
fwrite($fpoo, BigEndian2String(strlen($better), 4).gzcompress($better));
fclose($fpoo);
                                $atomstructure['subatoms'] = QuicktimeParseContainerAtom($UncompressedHeader, $ThisFileInfo, 0, $atomHierarchy, $ParseAllPossibleAtoms);
                        } else {
                                $ThisFileInfo['warning'] .= "\n".'Error decompressing compressed MOV atom at offset '.$atomstructure['offset'];
                        }
                        break;

QuickTime Utilities

QTCoffee

A set of command-line Mac OS X utilities for manipulating QuickTime movies and other QuickTime readable media (AVIs, MPEGs, as well as audio files such as MP3s and AACs).
http://www.3am.pair.com/QTCoffee.html

qt_tools ( qt_export qt_atom qt_info qt_thing ) - command line only

http://www.omino.com/~poly/software/qt_tools/
qt_thing is a command line tool that displays various information about the components installed in your system. Shows a list of all installed and available CoDecs (imdc, imco), import (eat ), export (spit) components etc or by type.
qt_info is a command line tool that sets or displays various information about a QuickTime movie. Most of this information is available -- in one form or another -- via QuickTime Player. qt_info prints the information in a somewhat script-friendly format, if that's your trip. It also shows what I considered to be the relevant features all at once, with no tabbing between the different QuickTime Player panels.

ThingLister

AppleScript that lists thng resources. http://brennan.young.net/Comp/LiveStage/things.html

Fiendishthngs (shows info for things (thng resources))

"Many services on Mac OS X, such as image compression and decompression, audio compression and decompression, importers, exporters and so on are provided by components. Components are a type of shared library that you can manipulate using the Component Manager. The Component Manager registers these shared libraries by looking for a component resource (a resource of type 'thng') in a specific component file.
Given a particular component type, the Component Manager can locate and query all components of that type. You can find out how many components of a specific type are available and you can get further details about a component's capabilities.
Fiendishthngs lists all the Components it finds on the system and lets you query them for information. It will also list more detailed information for the following QuickTime Component Types:
Movie Importers 'eat '
Movie Exporters 'spit'
Graphics Importers 'grip'
Graphics Exporters 'grex'
Image Codecs 'imco' / 'imdc'
QuickTime Effects 'imdc'
Data Handlers 'dhlr'
Video Digitizers 'vdig'
Clock Components 'clok'
Video Output Components 'vout'"

avi2DivX.jar

For MPEG-4 files from older Samsung camcorders. This program changes the fourcc code within avi files from SEDG to DIVX. (Which can also be done using a hex-editor and the fourcc XVID also works. See also the Videntify script which changes the SEDG fourcc as well. )
NOTE: Although the video will play after changing the fourcc code, it may not be possible to copy or cut clips from the video and paste them into other movies. (Resulting clip plays as blank white video.)

Macromedia Shockwave, Flash and Authorware browser plug-ins

QuickTime 7 will play Flash version 5 and earlier formats but not Flash version 6 or 7 files. The Flash plug-in will of course but it may be necessary to stop the QuickTime plug-in from trying by going to Apple menu > System Preferences > QuickTime > Advanced > MIME settings > Miscellaneous and unchecking "Flash media". Note that at the time of this writing, none of the Macromedia components are Universal Binaries that support Intel based Macs and thus it is necessary to force Safari to run within Rosetta on an Intel based Mac in order to use these plug-ins.

QuickTime related Problems

Classic won't launch under Mac OS X 10.4.x (Tiger)

Try removing the DivX 5 component from /Library/QuickTime and Library/Application Support/DivxNetworks/libdpus10.dylib

Video stalls during MPEG playback

Try opening GarageBand, then quit GarageBand.

Error -2126 when exporting

This is a bug caused by a software protection scheme in the Flip4Mac Export component which occurs even when exporting to formats other than asf / wmv. A work-around is to move the Flip4Mac components from /Library/QuickTime to the Desktop, quit and re-run QuickTime Player.
NOTE: Flip4Mac WMV has been updated, try updating to a newer version!

No sound in QuickTime

Open the Audio MIDI Setup program in /Applications/Utilities and select Built-in Audio in the "Properties for" pop-up list. Then change the default audio output format to 44100 Hz and quit the program.
See also No sound from some applications, but system alert sounds play (Mac OS X 10.3, 10.4)
Also try opening and then closing the GarageBand application.
If sound is missing only within avi files then also try removing the AC3 Codec.component a.k.a. AC3 CoDec version 0.3 (0.41 is ok) from /Library/QuickTime

DV compressed mov looks fine on TV but blurry on computer

"HiQual is a free utility for setting the high quality flag in DV-compressed QuickTime movies. By default, DV movies do not have this flag set, leading many people to wonder why their DV movies look fine when played to tape, but look so bad on the computer monitor."
http://www.synthetic-ap.com/products/hiq/index.html

Filename extension problems ( .mov vs. .mp4 vs. .mov )

Despite supporting both mov container files and mp4 video, QuickTime Player may not be able to recognize some mov files with filename extension mp4 or some mp4 files with filename extension mov. The relevant error message from QuickTime Player is: QuickTime cannot open the file: "my movie test-this is really a mov file.mp4" an unknown error occurred (-50). Changing the extension from mp4 to mov or vice-versa may allow QuickTime Player to recognize the file and its contents.
MP3 files with mpga extension may not be recognized, change the extension to mp3.
It is possible to copy and paste any QuickTime compatible content into a mov file, at which point the file format actually is mov. For instance, open and select all within a 3gp file, create a new player in QuickTime Pro and paste. Upon saving, the 3gp video is within a mov file and the file will not be recognized if the extension is changed to 3gp. To export an actual 3gp select Export instead of Save and in the export options select passthrough for both audio and video to export the movie without re-compressing.

Mac OS 9 and prior Components that are NOT OS X compatible

The following files are for OS 9 and prior and will not be of any benefit if placed in /Library/QuickTime (and may cause errors in OS X.) Any component with creation dates prior to 2000-09-13 is probably not OS X compatible as that was the release date for the Mac OS X Public Beta. Any component which is a single file (not a bundle), which has a resource fork with an empty data fork is also probably not a Mac OS X compatible component.

Components for Classic should go in System Folder:Extensions:QuickTime Extensions
