Install System Preferences

System Preferences.app from a stock Mac OS X 10.4.9 installation runs as-is on the AppleTV.

It allows setting of many more screen resolutions if you connect to a standard DVI display, among other standard Mac OS X settings.

Installation

Copy the /Applications/System Preferences.app directory from your Mac onto the AppleTV in /Applications/

Note: This will only work for a 1.0 Factory ATV. Otherwise you need to copy the directories /System/Library/Frameworks/PreferencePanes.framework/ and /System/Library/PreferencePanes/ from a Factory 1.0 ATV or from the OS.dmg from a recovery partition of an Apple TV 1.0. In this later case the commands are:

$ hdiutil attach OS.dmg -owners on
$ sudo cp -rp /Volumes/OSBoot\ 1/System/Library/Frameworks/PreferencePanes.framework/ /System/Library/Frameworks/PreferencePanes.framework
$ sudo cp -rp /Volumes/OSBoot\ 1/System/Library/PreferencePanes/ /System/Library/PreferencePanes

Also, if you are in trouble of getting the System Preferences.app directory from a Mac, it is available in the MacOSXUpdCombo10.4.9Intel.dmg. You can copy it using the same procedure as above. -- juan_sin_nombre, Oct 2008

Run

ssh to your AppleTV and run the following command:

open /Applications/System\ Preferences.app

Kill finder on your Apple TV if it is still showing and the System Preferences is not, using the following command:

kill $(ps ax | grep [F]inder | awk '{print $1}')
